Gretsch Amplifiers: 6156 Playboy (box style)

Like the smaller 6150s, the 6156 was a pint-sized mainstay of the Gretsch lineup, with models appearing as early as the tweed era. The example shown here has no 6156 markings, but the control panel and general configuration give it away as a direct precursor to the later Playboy.

From the rear, note the similarities in the contol layout, single 10" speaker, etc. This tweed example does lack one thing the later models had, though: tremolo.

The little 17-watt wonders were sold for almost 20 years and remain favorites among those looking for smaller amps. Through the 50s, in the various Electromatic incarnations, the 6156 kept a 10-inch speaker. Later models in the box-style cabinet were fitted with a larger, 12-inch Jensen.

I was given what I believe to be a 1961 Playboy amp by my father (serial#61461 model #6156). He received it from my mother along with a '59 Harmony Rocket guitar as a birthday present in 1962. My dad played the snot out of this combo until the late 1980's when he couldn't play anymore. I have my dads guitars and his Playboy amp and although I don't play as well as my dad, I still try to give them a good work out from time to time. I don't know what the market value on this amp is, but it will always be worth a million bucks to me! And just as a matter of interest to anyone reading this who may be wondering, the amp is near mint and all original. Including the foot switch for the tremelo! I'm a 1961 model as well and not in nearly this good a condition!:) Thanks for offering the space to brag a bit, and thanks for reading! All the best! p.s. Thanks, Dad!
