Late 70s, I presume?
It's interesting to compare the tone with live versions featuring the Guild, and, most recently, with the Gibson (terrible audio quality here).

Taking everything into consideration, the GRETSCH still is the bast sounding of the three by far IMHO.
Those vintage 6120s just look SO cool! I wish my DSV looked like that.
No contest, the Gretsch it is. Mind you, that German TV gig had the 6120 recorded just perfectly.
I'd be really interested in comparing them in person (the Gibson and the Gretsch, that is). I'd love to hear those custom pickups on the Gibson.
Pappy, the Gibson has Seymour Duncan Dynasonics, no big surprises there...?
Of course, you nailed it P: same amp, same venue and in person. I have a feeling that the Gibson will hold up well (from listening to clips). Anyway, Duane just wouldn't accept second best.
Walter, they look like humbucker-sized pickups, but all I could find is that they're custom designed for him. On HIS model there are dynas, which is something that makes me want to compare even more.
To me they look like P90s in humbucker wraps.
I also listened to the sound clip on Gibson's site and they sound like P90s as well.
Of course, Gibson doesn't make it easy to find dealers who have this model in stock. Makes me wonder how they survive as a business...
P90s eh? Sound INTERESTING.
interesting to note that duane is pickin' hard at the bridge with the neck p'up on. there was a thread here on the GDP recently talking about where the twang comes from and i think the consensus was more of the bridge p'up=twang vibe.
I think most of Duane's classic "twang" sounds are on the neck pickup, and I vaguely recall reading an interview where he says as much.
That picture Bear posted is on Gibson's website, but every pic I've seen online of Gibson D.E. guitars has the Duncan dynas. That pic must have some kind of prototype pic from before they went with the Duncans.
That's a prototype pic with GFS Dream 90's.
hyuck hyuck.
The Guild sounded very good but does not have the 'bite' that the Gretsch has.
It's difficult to render an opinion on the Gibson because there were other guitar players running interference with Duane's playing.
Here's Duane's Great Gretsch sound:

Here's Merle Travis playing the same song on a guitar I can't identify with P90 pickups:
What sensational performances on these two clips on this post!!:

Yep. Beautiful guitar, isn't it?
Ha! What about that Betty Page version?

It was available in Europe on a CD Rom, but it was discontinued in the 1990s.
Walter is, of course, correct. The company was eager to get the guitar up on the website, and took a shot of it with the (extremely) temporary pickups. So sorry for the confusion, Pappy, I'm working on getting that fixed! And I do believe you were the first one to notice, by the way.
When Duane and Mike McGuire started planning for this guitar, they spoke to Seymour about building a single coil pickup, which he did.
That's good to know. I've got no doubt that it sounds awesome (I'd still very much like to play one as it's Gibson's most beautiful guitar IMO) but those bigger pickups had me curious.
Thanks for the info!
Here's a Gibson press release on the Duane Eddy model.
Is there a general percentage difference between MSRP and street price of Gibson guitars? I'm just curious.
Damm, what a pity it's such a great concert...
