Ouch, ouch, ouch! I really gotta find a better amp for sure!
I've been having lots of fun with either a VOX DA-5 or a Roland MicroCube depending on which of the two the kids aren't using. But now that I've got TV Classics in my 5120, and although they do sound a whole lot better than the stock Gretschbuckers, they don't really sound all that much more "Gretschy" than what I had before, and not at all like I'd expected!
Not at all like the "Gretsch Voices" in the "Six Current Models Tone Tested" thread. On a totally subjective scale; I'd guess I've gone about halfway from Gretschbucker to Gretsch. Bummer.
I would have expected that one of these two amps with their tons of internal amp modeling settings would have gotten me a little closer to the "Traditional Gretsch Sound" than what I'm currently hearing.
Super Bummer.
...I grew up with tubes; I luv tubes, are they my salvation; I wonder?
And that 5222 is so darned cute.
I use a little VOX Pathfinder for practice and jamming with my guitarfriends. Then I have a Marshall 100watt when i need to blast. The big one is to heavy to bring to rehearsal and the little one is drowned by the drums. I,m planning on getting a amp in between. Any suggestions? Not made of money so a amp under 400 euro/700 dollars is to be concidered.
Hi Guys! I use two Marshalls(JCM 800 & 900)when I play out. I recently got myself a small GK 250 subway for practice at home.By the way my 5120 is bone stock, sans pickguard. I'm pretty set for tone.
Fender DeVille... tube, 2x12, great reverb
great amp, although I've been lusting after Orange's lately
Another Blues Jr here. Just put some TV Classics in my 5120 and it's taken me a bit of adjusting, but I think I'm starting to know how this amp likes to take the "new" guitar.
F107, get some tubes. Why not take your 5120 with you, go to a store and try it with some tube amps. See if you get saved.

Cool idea on going to a store.....except the nearest one that may have something is almost an expensive two hour drive away! A budget breaker for sure! I'm pretty much limited to nifty small stuff like the 5222 or the 600 or the Valve Jr. I'd thought of building one, but as I learned while soldering in my Classics; I'd most likely burn my nose before I was through!
So I'm beginning some pretty heavy research on the smaller tube amps in my no-more-than-I-spent-on-my-pups price range. Even research can be fun!
EDIT: Murphys' Laws...gotta luv 'em.
Or...."open Mouth; Insert Foot."
Well; I'm still thinkin' of a good tube amp, but;.....tinker with the amp; tinker with the amp....hey! There's a Gretsch hidin' in there!
Uh; do wax filled pups have a Break-In time? Someone tell me that pups have break in.

The 5222 is a good little practice tube amp that just needs a Weber or Jensen 6" speaker upgrade to make it a great little amp - for practice or recording. The install is easy (by any standard) and the results are more than worth it.
A few GDP'ers have made this mod, and I don't think any of them are unhappy with it.
If you can handle a hybrid, the Super Champ XD and the Vibro Champ XD are smart choices too.
F107, if you're interested, I've got a Silver Faced champ for sale. It's got a bigger output transformer, a 6L6, and a 10" speaker. Tone for days.
Check it out:
You can hear it here:
PM me if you'd like some info.
Sometime ago I found a 72 silverface Vibro champ for 299! Shoulda coulda woulda! I left it on the shelf. At the time I think had just bought something else.
In June right after nashville I did the same with a 66 Ampeg M-15 at 625. That hurt but I needed a bass amp!
I've been reading over all the available threads for the mods to the 5222 and what I really like about it is how I can do it slowly over time as I am with modding my 5120. It doesn't kill the budget and I still have the nice stuff to work with and play with right from day one. Right now it's at the top of my short list.
I've still got THREE MORE AMPS TO BUY!! All four of our Grandkids living with us(we actually adopted them)want new instruments! The first one already has his Squire Strat. The second one wants an Epiphone LP. The third one wants a Yamaha Electronic Drum Set, and the youngest one; a Little Girl; wants a Squire "Hello Kitty" Strat in Pink!
.....maybe I'll need more than just five watts for me! It's gonna get loud in here!!
EDIT: Silverface Champ. Hmmmmmmm; not really familiar with that one, looks cool though! Sounds cool too!
Right now the budget is crammed full of impending school clothes and school supplies for the kids, and a Les Paul for the one who's next in line for a fiddle.
But if the timing were better it would certainly be worth some strong consideration for sure!
Speaking of the LP, check your mail, I sent you a PM, I might be able to help you out there as well...
Im playing my 5125 through a Fender Hot Rod Deville. I swapped out the preamp tubes though to give the amp more headroom, tame the gain on the drive channel and give it better tone overall.
Wow Keith: I wish I were in the market for an LP at the moment! After looking at the photos; I'd buy the darned thing for ME! That's way too nice for a 14 year old!
And looking at your history; I'd sure have no worries about buying from you either!
Yeah; you've got some really nice stuff for sale there. Wish the timing were better.
Thanx for the consideration!
Rich.
No worries Rich. Just thought I'd send you the link in case something worked for you.
Cheers BD
I feed mine into a Boss GT10 which goes stereo into 2 Tech 21 Power Engine 60s and it sounds surprisingly superb. Old school Gretsch sound into Nu-School incredibly ugly (but very handy) Boss multi FX unit.
When I'm too lazy to carry the GT10 I have a Tech 21 Tri-OD and Boost RVB pedals and a Morley Little Alligator which goes first in the chain, more for volume rollback/clean sound than 0%-100% master volume use.
I will have to change from my FM 212R,,, to a Blues jr... Which should be here anytime now...

No amps over here. I don't play in bands anymore and decided to go the digital route; I've bought a Digitech GSP 1101: ampmodeler & effectprocessor. In the past I used effects a lot since I payed ambient, but this time I wanted to nail the sounds of various players of bands I admire. It's also great to be able to connect the unit to my pc via USB.
I play thru a Fender Frontman 25R and use a Boss Digital Delay DD-3 pedal. I use the pedal for a slap back sound because, I play Rockabilly, Country and 50's Oldies. I get the sounds I want and I use 10's on my G5120. For me, it's the perfect combo!!!
I haven't got my 5120 yet, (due in on the 29th) in my little apartment I use a behringer V-amp 2 though some headphones. sounds fine with my artcore afs75t I usually use the blackface model with slapback and alittle compression.
My 5129 through a Mesa Triaxis and 20/20 with a 2x12 cab for live and my little Mesa .22 Caliber for knockin' around the house.
My 5120 (limited run) now has a 1956 Bigsby B6, a Gretsch Synchrosonic bridge, a Kent Armstrong P90 in the neck and a Gretsch HS Filtertron in the bridge.
I build all my own amps with the main ones I play with being a '64 Deluxe Reverb clone, a '57 Bassman clone or a '55 Deluxe clone. Got a 5G9 Tremolux with 5881s on the way which I'll finish at some point...
Tommy.

It may sound odd, but I have a few Crate solid state amps that my 5120 sounds great through. My practice amp is a GFX-212 120w combo, and it does ok for practice. But my gig rig is a Crate GTH-1200 running through a blue diamond Ampeg 4x12 cabinet. I think anything would sound good through that cab though. The only guitar cabinets I've heard that I liked more were an Orange and a Bogner. Both of which were much more expensive. I've played several Crates over the last 8 years or so, and never really had a problem with them. Good tone, and really durable. Road ready for sure!
