Question for Elixir Nanoweb String Users

  Hi. I recently tried a set of Elixir 11-49 Nanoweb strings on my Power/Duo Jet.

  I really like the way the wound strings feel -- smoother than uncoated roundwounds, but the plain strings have an unusual feel. They are not smooth and "glassy" like regular strings, and produce a much more audible "swoosh/squeak" when I run my fingers up or down them without fretting.
  

  They sound fine and intonate well, so its not a big deal.

  Is this typical of your experience with these, or did I get sold a set that has been sitting around too long?

  I have not noticed this phenomenon at all. My plain strings feel normal to me.

  Its almost like they are a bit rusty, though the plains are supposed to be coated with something to prevent rust.

  I probably just got sold a "vintage" set.

  I don't know about the electric ones, but I'm pretty sure the Elixir acoustic plain strings are not coated.

  I think it was fairly recently that the anti rust plain strings were introduced. If your packaging has the anti rust logo on it then they should be a relatively new set. Looking at the website it appears the anti rust strings are optional on acoustic strings.

  Wishin and DGJ are both correct. I haven't used elixer electrics in quite a few years but I do know that the older ones didn't have coatings on the plain strings. I wouldn't worry about anti-rust strings anyway - just wipe your plains with a teeshirt and a tiny drop of oil - no more rust and a new feeling string every time. I love elixers myself - I use them exclusively on my acoustics.

  I put a set on my Yamaha AES620. I noticed the strange feel at first, but it soon went away. Perhaps the coating wears off. After a few hours of playing they felt just like normal strings. I've had them on the guitar for over a month now, and play it about an hour a day, so they appear to last quite a long time.

  The biggest difference I noticed when I used them was that my wallet was much lighter, which unbalanced me and compromised my playing ability.

  I hear what you're saying Tsar. I sort of have mixed emotions about Elixers (acoustic only) They come out of the box sounding a little dead or at least well broken in, but they do keep that same sound for a looong time.

  I use them more as a utility on my acoustic, which I tend to play the crap out of, but only around the house. If I were to be recording or gigging, I'd use John Pearse.

  The JPs do sound better but the Elixirs sound the same (like JPs after a week) for 3 months.

  I also wait until they are 2 for 1 at my local shop
