When I was a kid, the music store in our town had Gretsches with padding on the back like a kitchen chair. All the Gretsch pictures I've collected have not shown this feature.

Here's a pic. They are quite common on anything with mutes and some of the thinner hollowbodies with fake F-Holes.

Here is a pretty rare one on a 58/59 Falcon.
VERY very cool.
The reason they put the back pad on there is because they cut a big hole in the back of the guitar to fit the mutes in there and then they cover the hole with a piece of plastic and to try and make it more comfy, they put the back pad with snaps on it.
