On a recent trip to NYC a working musician hipped me the this fender bass amp from the seventies. When he told me it was lite had a great tone and were cheap my ears perked up. I got on on ebay and a nos set of tubes for $300 when I returned. Mine has a 6HG5 tube and other years have 6L6. It is point to point wired with vol and tone and a 12 inch Jensen. Fellas this thing has a great tone, Took it to a club the other nite and a buddy set it on 2.5 with a six piece jazz group and kicked ass. It is twelve watts I am told vol past 5 the tone changes and sounds very much like a champ at full volume. I carried it two blocks with a two finger grip it is that lite. Does anyone have an experience with the 6L6 model ? I am gettin another one of these while they are cheap and maybe putting a 15 inch Jensen in it.

I think I've heard of this too.
Also, some "Bronco" amps are like a Champ?
My current small tweed box is a basic Champ 5watt circuit with a 12" speaker. Really works well for much wider application than I'd have thought. Something about class A, and all...

I picked up one (not the 6L6 version) that had a blown speaker. These little "bass" amps had really crappy speakers in them and I have been told that Fender toned down the amp's bass response to prevent them from shredding. I put a cheap Celestion in it and installed a Torres mod kit to bring back the bass. It made a sweet little lead amp but couldn't compare to my Blues Deluxe. I swapped it to another musician who plays electric violin and loves it.

Hmmmmm.....makes one wonder how a 5222 would sound with a larger speaker?
Almost makes one wish they'd come out with a 5222/Champ 5W head unit.

I haven't heard of any music masters using 6L6 tubes. Mine uses two 6V6 tubes. I also have the original speaker still in it. It sound fantastic for recording bass. I set the amp to ten and then adjust the volume on the bass guitar to set the amount of overdrive/break-up/clean. On mine, setting the volume all the way up just seems to open the sound up with bass guitar.
It sounds great with guitar too.
