I'm reckin I need to try the MXR (deep purple, three chrome knobs, and two switches - what's not to like about that?) and the Seymour (FOUR knobs!).
I believe you about the Surf Trem and all...and I like the color and the chicken-heads...but just two knobs? Shoot, that's no more than you get on an AMP.

I've got the earlier Dunlop-made manifestation of that Purple Stereo Trem pedal, it's very nice. However, I'm simply not using it much, I might consider listing it in the Garage Sale if anyone's interested.

Seriously guys check out the fulltone trem. I tested a lot of tremolo pedals and the fulltone was the most diverse and pleasant sounding. Almost every trem pedal other than the fulltone has a limitation of some kind some are really good at smooth others do well at square wave but the fulltone really is the only trem you will ever need to buy. It is a bit expensive but its better than buying a lesser pedal and having to replace it with something better or just buying something that works differently. There is no best distortion, reverb, delay,chorus but i truely think this is the best tremolo and i challenge anyone to find a shortcoming in this device. The only trem that i think could be equal in value with it is the new dano coolcat trem but i haven't tried one yet and the most appealing thing about it is that its cheaper than the fulltone.

Years ago, when they were working in the studio, Duane gave one of his to Ry Cooder, and we watched Ry excitedly plug it in, so sure he was going to get the total mojo workin' any second. There was a little sizzle and a long plume of smoke. Nothing. Dead. Finito.
Even though it was a goner, he still dug the way it looked sitting on his amp. So, they get back to work, and the next thing I hear, they're playing Ketty Lester's Love Letters Straight From Your Heart. Oh, how I wish it had been recorded.

Deed, that's the thing with the DeArmond tremolo units - it's very hard to find a working one. Saw the Ebay one too, and that guy's just reaching, I think.
I got one. It don't work.
I have had a couple of them DeArmonds, and they DO sound fabulous! But as long as the topic is tremolo, I must say that THE best sounding tremolo I have ever heard is in one of my early 60's Standel amps. Real watery and wobbly all over, wub, wub, wubba sounding. Bettter than Magnatone, and it seems to me that only one "generation" of Standels have that circuit.
The tremolo pedal I like the most though is the Guyatone Flip series, about $180 or so, and they do sound very nice, IMHO.
A surf trem in line with a Red repeat has worked well for me.
I bought a used Voodoo Lab Tremolo for a decent price. It's an optical tremolo like in my Fender blackface amps (I use it with a tweed Deluxe clone and a MESA/Boogie).
It sounds great.
The intensity and speed controls are very sensitive. I only use about a 5 degree range on either of them. Also, the four knobs are very close together. I set the slope at it's lowest setting and removed the knob. I set the volume where I liked it and removed that knob also.

Hey Tex, I've got a Standel S80 with Trem. Does not currently work. Think it's the same circuit? Who works on yours woody or Maag. I would send it to Maag but I don't have a spare year on my hands.

Have never heard the trem in the S series piggy backs. The amp I refer to is a 50J12V, early 60's combo.
I'd been using a BYOC tremolo kit pedal for a year or two but even though it sounded nice it didn't have enough headroom to withstand my Gretsches with a booster running. I replaced it with an Empress Tap Tremolo which I rate very highly. The "tube" wave setting sounds very much like old Fender and it can do tap-tempo or ramping between two speeds. It can also do different rhythms which is fun to play around with.
