I love my Mustang Bass RI.
I love Mustangs from Way Back!
Definately have their own sound!
Even Willie Nelson played one in the 60's!
yup, i've played both the current Fender Mustang reissue and Mustang Bass, and i've got to say: they were both fucking amazing! i think i'd rather have either one than, say, a Stratocaster or Precision Bass (as much as i love both of them!) the shorter scale (i assume) gave them a real "smokey" / "woody" / whatever quality missing from most Fenders, but they still sound completely Fender, and not the least bit like, oh, a Gibson. plus, they look cool! maybe not quite Jaguar cool, but pretty close…
My son has a 50 something duo-sonic (same basic vibe, no trem) we love it. Somethinf about that shorter scale. The pickups sound really cool. Plus it's a genuine VINTAGE Fender which I payed $175.00 bucks for!
I say go for it. You might try to find and old one they are still pretty cheap.
Mustangs are VERY COOL. The short scale gives me a little difficulty because I have very large hands but nothing I can't deal with. I also love the Mustang vibrato. It is so smooooooth. What color are you planning on? I like the Daphne blue.
I like the dakota reds, but the Daphne blue also get me.

Proxy error A-Mundo.
Has anyone tried the new Duo-Sonic?
I've got a '64 Mustang and early '60's Duo Sonic and love them both. Great little guitars with plenty of Fender character.
I had one, but sold it. I bought a Danelectro Hodad instead. The Dano seems much more satisfying - tone-wise.
I had a '58 Duo-Sonic for many years.
Nice guitars.

Beautiful guitar, but it's not for me. I tried one once and couldn't make it right with the short scale, even using 011's...
I really like them, but must confess, I'm a recent convert. I just bought one of the player Jaguars in sunburst. Quite a versatile little axe, but the scale length seems to be a love it or hate it thing with most people. I'm on the love it side
Note: I bought the Jaguar, not a Mustang. I don't really care for the Mustang. If Curt Cobain is the best thing to happen to the Mustang, that's not saying much....
One thing I like about the Mustangs, at least the older ones, is they are great for testing out the tone of an amp.
If you want to hear what a Mustang can sound like, check out the early Johnny Winter albums - especially this album:
I had an original '66 Mustang in Dakota red for about 7-8 years. I bought it super cheap around the time the whole grunge thing took off in the early 90's. I fell in love with the look of it but I just never could bond with it. I'd play it for a week straight trying to like and then it would sit in its case for months on end. I'd go through the whole routine a couple of times each year and always concluded it wasn't for me.
I found the 24" scale too short and the fingerboard radius too round. The rear profile of the neck was nice but that was about it. The tremolo on it was fantastic and super smooth and the bridge was decent once I removed the chrome cover. The pickups seemed to be too thin and twangy at the time. I'm sure I could likely make it sound good now but back then my ears were still maturing and I thought it sounded like crap. I remember thinking it was the most beautiful piece of junk I owned.
I held on to it for many years before I traded it for a nice Fender amp. Forgot I even owned it till I read this thread. I guess that tells you how much I actually miss it.
