Nice
I had one of those Epiphone ES295's but have no pics of it, as i sold it. There was nothing wrong with it though, just had a cash flow problem.
I would love to get a Gibson version if i had the chance though.
Kool strap ya got there too
ooooooo very cool !
What a cool pairing! They're like mirror images of each other, the one cream where the other's gold and visa versums. Single-coil vs dual, Florendated vs Venusian, etc.
Both have picture-pickguards, so that balances too.
Plus neither has a headstock, yet the strings stay on...
Proteus said: They're like mirror images of each other, the one cream where the other's gold and visa versums.Hah! That was what my wife said!
They both sound very different (as already written single vs. dual), but very cool. I die before someone takes them from me.
Any way thanks guys!
that is nice, I've always wanted a es-295 (among other things), but the Epis are probably all I could ever afford...especially if I ever get to buy that Falcon that I've really always wanted!
so is it epiphone or gibson? and whats the big dif? if you dont mind my asking
I'm like Shet... I could only afford Epi now.
Only differences, that I have find in couple hours
Action/playability is about the same. I can't feel any difference.
Overall, Epi ES-295 is a really good guitar on this price category.
That strap does look nice!
Does Epi use a tension bar Bigsby because they don't have a licensed B6 clone? That's always been the sticking point for me.
The Epi 295s are very cool - especially for the price. I've had one for ten years. It's been modded with Grover Imperial tuners, a roller bridge, and P-90 spacers to elevate the pups a little bit. It's now gathering a little dust because my heavily modded 5120 gets all of the jobs that the 295 used to. It's a former workhorse that may emerge from retirement for the right project.
oh sorry mate i know theres a big difference in those guitars you have. A very good choice too i think.
i meant between the epi and gibson 295?
cause im in the same boat with the price range thing
nice, Sunshine. real nice. you should let me take care of that Falcon for you while you get familiar with that new guitar. I agree with the rest, that's a very nice guitar strap. did you make it ? I'm happy for you.
brent
Aside from the cosmetics (headstock shape, logo, etc.) the differences between the Gibson and Epi versions of the ES-295 pretty much come down to these:
Epi body is a little thinner --- the Gibson is 3.25", the Epi a little under 3".
The body plies are higher quality on the Gibson.
Gibson neck is one-piece mahogany, Epi is maple with a scarf joint.
Gibson uses higher-quality wiring, pots and switch.
I believe the Gibson has interior kerfing to strengthen the body, where the Epi doesn't.
Pickups are different, although Epi's P-90's do sound quite good.
The Epi has been discontinued (some NOS may still be available if you search).
All in all, though, the Epi plays and sounds pretty darned nice. At about a quarter the price of the Gibson, it's about 75 or 80% of the guitar the Gibson is. With upgraded wiring harness and pickups (if you like), you can get awfully (or wonderfully) close to the performance of the Gib for less than half the price. An analogy to an Electromatic vs pro-line Gretsch would be quite apt.
I can only second, third, fourth, fifth what has already been said about your ES-295: What a great compliment to your Falcon!
Too funny! I was at my old neighbours today and he pulled out his NOS Epi ES-295.I played it a bit unplugged and it was alright. I've always loved the look of them. Very nice pair.
OMG!
WOW!!!
I tried out an Epiphone ES-175 clone at a local dealership and came away very impressed. Nicely made and played very well. Was only $450.00. Alot of jazzbox for little $$$.
Brent, the strap is Levy's Country Strap. I didn't make it, but I wish I'm so talented. Isn't that the same thing? ;)
Parabar, thanks for the information. I knew there is someone who know the details about the guitar and the difference between Epi and Gibby. A lot of good stuff that I didn't know. I just try it and buy it (if it's good).
Maybe this is wrong forum to ask, but does anyone know what are these factory strings gauge? Feels like elevens...
Thanks to everyone for the kind comments! I'm going to my corner and play some...
Btw, I named them as Elvis & Scotty.
The Epi I played yesterday felt like it had 10's on it and felt light for me. I asked the owner and he said he didn't know what they were but he hadn't changed them since he bought it new. I play 11's on my Falcon. The Epi I played, even with it's shorter scale length, felt more like 10's.
Sunshine - a smart nice new guitar for you. Congrats!
And yes - that Levy strap is pretty cool too!
If anyone's interested, Tall Toad Music in Petaluma has one o' them there NOS Epiphone ES-295's in stock. Contact info is on their website here
The main difference between the Gibson and the Epi is that the Gibson costs 5 to 10 times more.
I do like the pairing you've got there. Those P-90s are great pickups.
I'm sure you all will be very happy.
