I can't seem to figure out how to lower the polepieces on my filtertrons on both my Firebird and my 6120, the popping when I'm muting sucks for recording. This is only a problem on the low E string. Any suggestions? Would coating the polepieces with clear nail polish or crazy glue affect the tone? Thanks for any replies.

I don't think you could keep it from popping if it's hit. You need to not let it get hit.
Something's wrong. Maybe you can pull some shims out. That pickup is riding too high.

It sounds like the pickup is too high at least on the bass side.
On vintage guitars, pickups too close to the strings can be indicative of the need for a neck reset. On these guitars, unless someone installed a spacer, lower a pickup usually means removing some wood under the pickup.
For the newer guitars, many came from the factory with spacers. These can be removed and replaced with thinner ones or replaced with foam such as from a mouse pad. TV jones has a video on his website that shows how to do this.

These guys have the answer. Don't use super glue or nail polish. It won't help! Lower the pickup. Good luck!

This is happening with TWO guitars?
I imagine you'd tried adjusting the bridges heights already? It just seems weird that TWO guitars have the same problem. It's not a technique thing is it?

You're not supposed to press the strings into the pickups...

You say this happens when muting and not when playing? Aren't you pushing the strings down too hard with your palm when muting, maybe?
I have had them touch when playing too hard, the best is to lower them a bit but if it only happens when muting, try to lighten you touch.
edit: Wenzel, it appears we had the same thought.....

I guess I must be a little heavy handed, it is part of my technique to ride the side of my hand just over the bridge at all times, I'm very consience of it with the Gretsches. I love them but they're not the only guitars I play so the thought of pressing the strings into the pickups gets forgotten until I go back to them and I really have to work to control it. Both of these guitars are recent manufacture and the setup and action is perfect on both except for this problem. I think I'll take wenzels perspective and run with that for a while.Prudent advice...

Thanks for all the replies.
