wenzel said: Walter, the freak heat wave has to do with differences in culture. In America it would have been aphaulling to allow our senior citezens to go without A/C. In the U.S. if it can ever get hot, there's probably air conditioners in the buildings. I spent 4 years in Germany sweating my you know what off with no A/C and constantly wondering why they didn't have it in their buildings. Of course some buildings did, but not the majority and certainly not mine.
The key word is "freak". Not difference in culture, difference in climate.Nobody was prepared for that kind of weather, nowhere in Europe. I still have a couple of fans around the house I bought that summer. If it's cold and rainy most of the year, and you get maybe six weeks of summer, AC is not your primary concern. Hardly any buildings have AC over here, because 99% of the time, we don't need it.
And yes, it's a little insulting to see some horrible events in Europe linked to "European social life" in your posts, and to see you have "riot!" "crazy frenchmen!" as a first reaction to a topic like this. Doesn't hurt to think before you post.
There's some "those savages over there!" in there that's not very nice, and honestly, doesn't make you seem very intelligent. -

If I ever learned anything in all these years stupid has no borders, Stupid doesn't have any one langauge, idealogy, gender nor social class. Stupid can strike at any given moment and finally brillance so so much harder!
But some days stupid can be so much more fun!
I didn't say that out loud did I?

What a terrible thing to happen!!!
I am glad Brian is OK (I am seeing the Cats on Wednesday so I would be distraught if they had to cancel the forthcoming shows over this)
The Brian Setzer forum is an excellent resource and I sincerely hope that Tommy reinstates it again sometime soon. I can remember in the dim and distant past the site used to have a forum (7/8 years ago) - it got pulled from the site not long after that and was only relativly recently reinstated!!
I hope to see you in good health and on top form on Wednesday Brian!!
Cheers

Ah, OK. It would be interesting to see the shitstorm that would have erupted if I had posted something like "Chris, the aftermath of hurricane Katrina has to do with differences in culture. In Europe it would have been appalling to act (not act..) that way in the case of a natural disaster". I don't see the "joke" in that.and :
I think you're acting too sensitive!
Or I could have posted some pictures of Colombine high school in reaction to a thread about some European performer hurting his pinky on tour in the US?

Walter, I get it. Seems you're enjoying rubbing it in that you're right and I'm wrong. I don't personally care who's right or wrong since I am entitled to an opinion or to give an example of an observation I may have made while living in Europe. I don't think it was really necessary to post that after I removed all of my misconstrued posts. Sorry you took me the wrong way. I just get tired of being misunderstood on the internet sometimes and don't appreciate being told how to post. I think, I post, but I assume that you're all grown up to know what I meant. Most of you know me as not being the asshole and ignorant person that you are portraying me to be. It was a misunderstanding, so let's move on and stop ruining this thread about Brian Setzer having his hand bruised by a Samurai Sword in France...

Walter much to this country's shame Katrina's aftermath had a large amount of impact due to cultural differences. Before I left for Adana Turkey in the late 70's there were large scale riots in Adana. While I was there they had the mass executions at the football stadium.
I'm always amazed how as a people thoughout the world we pat ourselves on the back about our great acheivements as a civilized society yet as proof of our deeds we're not all that far removed from the days when we picked the fleas from our mates for food and sex. Sometimes I wonder how we made it this far.

RJ, I know, I happened to be in the southern U.S. for a month right after it happened.
And I know that it's very sensitive, complicated matter, which is why I would never casually mention that "to show what crazy, crude heartless bastards Americans are, different culture!" which is sort of how Wenzel's post read. And I hope you didn't read any "patting myself on the back" in my posts - that wasn't what I was saying at all.

NO! Not at all! That was one of my more grim statements of the world in general! Nothing I said in any of these posts were aimed at anyone here just the idiots who throw things onstage!
But...........this country is full of heartless cruel bastards so even if that was posted no offense would have been taken!
I mean my God it's so true! I've had to stop reading the newspapers and watching CNN. I've learned to pick and chose what I want to know without becoming too narrowminded. In some states here if you get caught with the wrong amount of weed 3 times you can get life in prison but they parole baby rapers constantly and at an alarming rate after they go thru some doctors evaluation and are pronouced cured!
We do have our good points it just seems that for every giant leap forward as a whole mankind sometimes takes 5 steps backwards and we seem to trip over our feet quite a bit!

The first sentence in the original post read like this... "what appeared to be a switchblade knife was thrown onstage LATE in the show."
"Of course the site will be back, once the fans get their money back."
Brian's website, and those who help run it, have absolutely nothing to do with the French concert-goers getting their money back. I would imagine that this has been a rather unsettling experience for all involved. What difference does it make if the site takes a little bit of a break to clear the air? It's all just none of our business, really.
(The photo taken during the Muslim ghetto riots in Paris is a bit of a stretch.)

The Beatles were the target of threats when they were touring and by the time they quit touring they were becoming justifiably concerned for their own safety. Sadly, the Beatles popularity was a two-edged sword and their overwhelming success made it impossible to continue performing live. (By virtue of some miracle I have managed to avoid this problem in my career as a performer. Usually when a crowd gets ugly at one of my gigs it's because of my playing).
I guess that whenever (and wherever) you get large crowds together there is a chance that some reprobate is going to choose to stand out among the crowd by some anti-social behavior. I'm very glad that I don't have the burden of fame, especially in today's focacta world.

Just a few weeks ago, country singer Pat Green called out to the audience and asked if anybody "had a cold one". Someone did. A beer can was hucked from the audience, caught him between the eyes and knocked him out cold.
Some people.

When I was playing at a bar in Wawa, Ontario in 1971, someone threw a glass ashtray at our keyboard player. It hit her in the face and knocked her out cold. While the drummer and I were helping her offstage, our singer/sax player (and her boyfriend) ran across the top of the tables, grabbed the guy, dragged him outside and beat him unconscious.

I remember someone threw a beer bottle or I really think just flung at the Rev during one of his shows. The whereabouts of said beer flinger is unknown to this day.
There are fans, and then there are, "wish I never became a success" people lurking around in the crowd. Either this guy wanted to get noticed, pay tribute to a song, or was hating how the show was turning out, it still was stupid and nuts.

I tend to think that it was just an overzealous fan who really meant no harm and maybe thought it was cool (Brian does sing about such things) to whip a Stiletto at the band... Some folks take lyrics very literally.
I can understand the apprehensiveness of the band to continue playing. I would have backed out as well.

LOLI've been in some rough waters and am late to see this thread, but I hope you kids will play nice. While this is the most civilized and intelligent site I've ever had the privilege of reading, every once in awhile we tend to get touchy. I know I've written a few things that people didn't appreciate, but with few exceptions everyone seems to respect everyone else's right to write. May it always be so.
And for the main topic - Brian Setzer - I'm sure this isn't the first scare he's had, in part because he's famous (which invariably makes some people jealous) and in part because he cultivates a teddy-boy (British Invasion-speak) image. But he is a great, inspirational artist, and I truly hope he's never hurt by the wackos drifting around us. Maybe in the new political spectrum (not just McCain or O'Bama, but worldwide), we'll get back to manners, accountability, and reasonable investment in mental health resources.

I'm so glad Setzer is OK - but whatever the reason the guy or girl chucked the knife - that was just plain stupid. A stupid thick person.
And it's nowt to do with culture - there are thick stupid people in all nationalities. However - riots do generally seem to be a bit more cultural. It would appear to me that riots are more common in some countries than others - but most of them are usually due to political reasons - and maybe those countries that do seem to riot more often are governed by leaders who have brought the riots upon themselves deservedly?
What surprise me is that here in England there hasn't been full scale riots to get Gordon Brown removed from office!!

I suppose I have to chime in on this one...
So :
1-There is no excuse for throwing anything at anyone, and I hope the guy got a good beating from the crowd around him!
2- I am glad Brian wasn't really hurt, and I hope the rest of the tour is just fun and great gigs !
3-Building on this stupid act by one person to diss us french is , at best, stupid. Do you even know if he was a french? Remember, when the olympic flame went through France and there were protests about Tibet that sparkled a whole lot of s&"t between us and the Chinese? What hurt most was a guy trying to pry the flame off the hands of a disabled chinese girl... friggin french do you think ? No way, Jose, he was an american citizen that thought protesting would be easier in our country !
4- The key word is "APPEARED" to be a switchblade...
According to french radio news it was a switchblade looking COMB !

Frankly, I wouldn't care if it was a cuddly little hamster that was thrown, it's inappropriate to throw objects at people and just because someone is onstage doesn't nullify the rule. I don't know or care who did it and their national origin is of no concern, this behavior was inappropriate in any setting. Believe me, there are plenty of louts in the US that would do this sort of thing and probably any other place as well, as RJ said, "stupid has no borders".
I'm willing to believe that no harm was intended, it may have just been a gag designed to get a laugh and the fact that it hit anyone wasn't in the plan. I still default to my original statement, it's inappropriate to throw objects at people.
