I'm not the biggest rockabilly twangster fan (dont get me wrong.. setzer is one of my fav players but I wouldnt have the best knowledge of some of the rockabilly stuff you boys know) but for me the ultilate constant gretsch album tones are anything by ACDC, the Rev Horton Heat and The Living End, specially their self titled album (nothing but a gretsch annie), modern artillery (mostly Gretsch falcons and the 6120 that is sitting in my room) and State of Emergency. The other 2 albums are also gretsch the majority of the time but also do have their fair share of Gibson

Everyone's mentioning the RHH but I thought he recorded with Gibsons with P90s for the most part.

Pappy, I think the first album is all a 50's P90 Gibson ES175 (and that's the album with the coolest guitar tone IMO), after that I think there's a lot of Gretsch and a little Gibson.

While we're talking Gene Vincent & company, don't forget Johnny Meeks! He did a few Gretsch things before he went to the "Blondie" Strat. "Lotta Lovin" and "Dance To The Bop" for example, on a Country Club. He also used a 6120 for a while.

Neil Young's "Harvest", and Still's work with the "Memphis Horns" are good old "Gretsch Sounding" albums.
During the early 70's, they both were in a "Falcon" phase at times.
Stills into Marshalls, and Youngs stereo set up into Fenders(with a Baldwin "Exterminator"
)

good point! the tone Neil gets on "Alabama" still gives me shivers 35 years later. i'm not sure what-all Stills played on the first solo album, but Stephen Stills 2 sounds like there's FilterTrons all over it. Stephen was still playing his Gretsches a lot during the Manassas period as well; he went over to Gibson Firebirds for the most part in the late 70s, and had a long Tele phase in the 80s/early 90s. according to an article i read online, he's now using multiple units of the signature model Falcon and the Fender '57 Strat reissue on the road. it's true, i'm a pathetic Stills fan...i actually bought Right by You, and i can even listen to "Driving Thunder" from American Dream with a straight face. sometimes.

my memory keeps trying to tell me that the Jesus and Mary Chain Gretsch was an Anniversary, but i have no idea if that's correct or not.

I understand that Cliff Gallup's widow requested that no mention of his time with Gene Vincent should be made in Cliff's obituary. Whatever the reason, in light of that it seems unlikely to me that we will see the Gallup family agree an endorsement deal that would effectively commemorate that period of Cliff's life.

I forgot my usual "shameless plug" for Paul Cotton and POCO.
Paul's last CD "When the Coast is Clear" has a lot of "that great Gretsch sound", not to mention some great songs and guitar work.
The Gretsch sound will go on forever, in some form of music

Kinda odd isn't it Rock L, that Cliff's family didn't want Cliff associated with Gene?? If it weren't for Cliff's tour with the Blue Caps, Gene wouldn't have been as well known and Cliff would be COMPLETELY obscure (Instaed of just "sort of" obscure)! They're forever associated in the hearts of GV&BC's fans.

I believe they were just respecting Cliff's wishes. Mr. Gallup, for reasons known only to him, always shyed away from and downplayed any discussions of his period with the Blue Caps, that's the reason for the obituary omissions. But maybe just maybe, from what I've read in different articles when I can find them, toward the end he may have opened the door just a creek. So I hope I'm wrong, but I would be surprised if there ever was a Cliff Gallup sig, of course that would be up to his family. I can't help but think though had he been asked, he would have responded to just go buy yourself a Jet.
As for Cliff's Jet, it must be out there somewhere, whoever has it probably doesn't know it, and probably couldn't prove it if he did. Just adds to the mystique.

IIRC Gene Vincent left the Blue Caps stranded in California at one point. There may have been some very negative feelings that lingered for years.
Ttbomk Cliff Gallup did not pursue music exclusively as his way of making a living.

A really great example of the Filter'tron sound is "Aztec" by Bo Diddley - That cut takes the Filter'tron through a great range of tones -

Hi! folks,
nobody mentioned "Everybody knows this is nowhere" from Neil Young, which is one of my favourites.
Plonky intro from "Down by the river",guitar interlay on the title song and solos on "Cowgirl in the sand" are some of the highlights for me Danny Whiten and Neil are playing 6120's and Falcons, right?

There's 2 different stories that i've heard about Cliff's Jet - the first was that it was stolen in the early '60's and he bought a Country Gentleman to replace it.
The other story i've heard from a reliable source is that Jeff Beck bought Cliff's Duo Jet from Doris Gallup
Which version is really true - I don't know. What I do know is that in a few days time it's 20 years since Cliff Died.
Another vote for Bo Diddley too btw - his tone on 'We're Gonna Get Married' from 1966 is pretty fine.

I guess that would be fitting if it ended up with Beck. The only reference I've found and I don't remember where, was that he traded it in when he bought his Gent.
