Steverb, I have to assume you've yet to have the Broooce live experience, yes? Say so, cuz I was luke warm to mild on Springsteen until I saw him live. Pound for pound, Bruce & company deliver the most energy of any live act I've ever seen...including the Stones, whom I adore. It's after I caught Bruce in the act that I "got it". Didn't turn me into a groupie, mind you...not even a drooling disciple, but definitely a life-long fan.

Preshate the kind words on the avatar, but have you gotten a load of MR TROUBLE? There's an avatar!

Well, I agree that Ronnie Wood probably was stronger in the Faces, but then he wasn't sharing duties with Keith. I find Ronnie's playing has been quite strong in recent years (when he's been relatively sober, I assume, although it sounds like he's fallen off the wagon even more recently).

Without a doubt, Jimmie Vaughan. The only second generation electric blues player that has managed to create his own, unique signature. Just as there are T-Bone licks and Buddy Guy licks, there are 'Jimmie Vaughan' licks, something you can't say about many others.

Also, Springsteen himself! His lead playing on the first three records is amazing. The solo on 'Backstreets' especially. Ferocious Tele-through- tweed tone.

Oh yeah: Cornell Dupree (Stuff, Aretha, King Curtis...) and Reggie Young (Bill Black, Elvis, Dusty...).

In defense of Ron Wood, I have to point out that he played all that beautiful steel guitar on the "Some Girls" album.

Another GREAT guitarist that no one has heard of is Marc Aaron. He was featured on John Cale's "Sabotage/Live" album and perhaps nowhere else.

I'm also surprised that no one has mentioned the absolutely brilliant Robert Quine, who died recently without ever receiving the recognition he deserved.

Billy, I live in Louisiana of all places. In the past two years I've met two different NON-guitar players who are very into Billy Zoom. Of course, this is by way of X, but they have mentioned your name FIRST without bringing up your group. I met these people in bars when my band was playing (I don't hang out in bars). These two incidents far outnumber the times someone has mentioned Steve Vai or Jimi Hendrix to me.

One band that is not very popular but with an absolutely amazing hard country rock guitarist is The Mother Trucker's Josh Zee. Dude is so talented and can pump out some very classic heavy rock and shuffle country licks. - CHECK HIM OUT

Dwight Yoakam's Lead Guiitarist, I believe his name is Pete Anderson, that guy can rip, "Just lookin' for a hit" is packed to the gills with tasty licks.

garageink, +1 for the Pete Anderson mention. The guy is a Bakersfield sound disciple, and without him there would have been no Dwight Yoakam.

I didn't take the time to read the whole thread, so forgive me if these guys have been mentioned before:

David Grissom. Nashville session monster, played with the Dixie Chicks (appears in their documentary 'Shut Up and Sing'). I saw him play with Joe Ely in a little Seattle bar in the early 90's. I got to talk with Joe a bit during a break, and he was just shaking his head, saying Grissom had pulled off some stuff that night he'd never seen in his life. Absolutely jaw-dropping roots rock alchemy.

Another all-time favorite of mine is Warner Hodges, of the late, great Jason & the Scorchers. This will blow your mind.

Alvin's "Woodstock" 335 (known as "Big Red") also had a Fender single coil pickup added between the 'buckers, with an extra volume control. Gibson currently offers a replica, complete with stickers:

Roy Clark...good 'un. Btw, I believe Roy is still alive & pickin', Whofan. All 75+ years of him. Has tour dates scheduled for 2009.

According to Wikipedia, Roy endorsed Gretsch guitars at some point, but I've never heard of a Gretsch "Roy Clark" Signature instrument.
