I don't know where you get the idea that hardly anyone that doesn't play rockabilly posts here. There have been so many topics about what people play, listen to and what their inspiration was where almost any kind of music you can think of has been mentioned. Yes of course there is a lot of Rockabilly here but so much other stuff as well.
I never thought Gretsch was for Rockabilly alone. I play any kind of music with any kind of electric guitar, doesn't make a difference to me.
I have played psychobilly in the eighties but that is as close to rockabilly as I got, aside from trying out riffs for fun. I came from punk and alternative rock and by way of psycho am back at alternative rock again.

to me, Husker Du was a totally logical idea...after the early hardcore days they were a singer-songwriter band that played loud/fast. e.g. as a composition the middle section/ending of "Celebrated Summer" is pure Joni Mitchell.

No Rockabilly comin' out of my guitars. Then again I'm not sure what is comin' out of my guitar most of the time.

Danman,
While I didn't spend a lot of time digging back through all the posts of the past year, I still note that the consistent topics of discussion are centered on rockabilly and roots rock-type music.
I see from this thread that there are several folks here who play other music styles and flavors.
It may appear to you that I am generalizing, and labeling everyone, but that is far from my intent. I meant no offense to you, btw. My apologies.

Hi Rally,
No need for apologies, but thanks anyway.
I didn't mean it in an attacking way but I just thought that it was strange that you mentioned it like that while I had seen so many other topics stating the opposite, specially this past year.
You are right that there is a lot of R-Billy and roots around here, for obvious reasons. And I do like Rockabilly and other roots music but that is definitely not what I listen to mostly and what I feel is what a Gretsch guitar is made for. If they had started making gretsches in another era they wouldn't have been associated with Rockabilly. They maybe would have played rockabilly on the Ibanez Steve Vai signature model.
Wouldn't it be something if they had to design a guitar for every different style of music and you only were allowed to play that style with that type of guitar...... -

I have an assortment of guitars and don't use any specific type of guitar for any specific type of music. I play Blues, Jazz, 60s & 70s rock and a dabble of RockABilly. The guitar I play usually depends on my mood at the time, but I have to admit that for about the last 3 or 4 years my 6120 has been my "goto" guitar for almost everything.

I play jazz, funk, latin, reggae, rock, blues, R&B, and all kindsa original hybrid stuff.
Rockabilly, not so much.
Gretsches have a character and tonal range that can suit many styles, just like guitars from other manufacturers (are Telecasters just for country? soul? rock?). Last weekend I played a gig that included blues, straight-ahead jazz, psychedelia, R&B, Americana/roots/country rock, and some good old rock 'n roll, and I ended up using my Gretsch 5120 for all of them, and it sounded great on all of 'em

I'm an oldies/60's/British Invasion affectionado: Beatles, Stones, Who, Kinks, Monkees, Byrds, CCR, etc. Elvis's "That's All Right Mama" is about as rockabilly as I get though I don't have those Scotty Moore/James Burton chops. But my '70 Streamliner works for the above types of music.

Yes, a Gretsch for EVERYthing else.
Rockabilly is some kind of submerged sublimated influence in my playing, part of the roots mix of "jazz", country, blues, rock & roll, r&b, surf, twang, pop, jangle, prog, psychedelic, hard rock, fusion, and whatever else comprises my "style."
Even when I take a sideways swipe at Rockabilly with a Capital R in one of my originals, no certified bonafide self-respectin' roots-rocker would credit my approach as being The Real Thing.
So I wouldn't say I don't play rockabilly...but rockabilly guys would say I don't.
The unique tone, response, and percussive and articulate Gretsch voice just happens to fit pretty much everyting I play.

Guess our "dream" is a no-go, Tim.
Our "secret plan" to use G Brand Cowboy Guitars to record Slovakian mediaeval liturgical music based upon the works of the Philharmonic Orchestra of Bratislava and Kosice is now over.
Damn... I knew this would happen! But what the heck, Vyacheslav, Alexander and Vladimir predicted this very outcome when we were in pre-production, right?
They kept telling us MORE Gene Vincent LESS Horowitz... What a shame.
Maybe we just need more cowbell??

I first got my Gretsch in 1966. so, I learned to play Cream, Buffalo Springfield, Deep Purple, other popular stuff and Lightin' Hopkins style of Blues. "rockabilly" wasn't too popular in the late 60's.

Tim: The Martian's have "clean hands" on this one. Please leave them out of this... I knew the "blame game" would happen after the fallout. Always does. Finger pointing, Martians, "It's the G brand cowboy guitars, we should have used our Clubs", etc.
Ric: There are many reasons for "glassy eyes" - esp. since you're in CA. You may find it helpful to listen to Jerry while digesting such information
