Only one of my guitars has a name - it's called 'The Flyswatter.' It's called that because I was at a barbeque, a little tipsy, and decided to swat a fly with my guitar. I impaled it on a parasol... I don't mind so much as it's a real beater of a guitar. I used it for busking so it was already quite beaten up.
Anyone here have a nickname for their Gretsch?

Chetette or possibly Chetena?
My latest one is called "Ole' Hole in the Side". I'll post some sad pics later. Maybe I'll call it Chet Achin' instead.

My Telecaster is named "Leona" After Leo Fender and Leona Atkins (Chet's wife).
My Ibanez AFS75T is "Kentucky Rose".
My Carvin is "Leilani".
My pink Indiana Strat clone is "Hot Stuff".
My Carlo Robelli, Dean, and Gretsch do not have names... yet.

The only instrument I've ever actually given a name to is the trumpet I played from middle-school through college. "Trigger", after Roy Rogers' horse. I'm not sure how I came up with the name, but that horn was just as faithful to me as Trigger could've been.
As for my guitars, they usually get referred to simply by their color. The strat is "the gold one", my old AFS75T was "the blue one", etc. The exception being my 5120, which is simply "The Gretsch", seeing as it's my only one.
One day I hope to add "The Hot Rod" to the lineup, but that'll definitely be a few years before I can afford one of those.
(I'd love a Setzer Hot Rod - just need to convince the missus.)

Fun thread indeed.
Well; I've also been calling my Orange 5120 "Orange Annie" cause; well; To me; She is.
Like an Annie She's missing her headstock and F-hole bindings, and she has a Black Headstock and 60s era pickguard in gold with Black logo like a 6117. And like many 6117s, she has fretboard binding.
And since I "Discovered" Gretsgh back in '58 and bought my 5120(to replace my long-lost' 65 Gent)in '08, that's a personal 50th Anniversary for me. Continuing with the '58 Annie theme; she has a pair of (TVJ)"Filters" and the "old style" Bigsby. An actual break from true Annie style is in the Pup surrounds which are Gold rather than Silver to go along with the 50th Anniversary theme. Additional reinforcement with the 50 year-old suggestion is with the Nickel plated pups to simulate the loss of Gold over time. The remainder of the hardware will also be Nickel as budget permits.
So yup; I'm calling mine "Orange Annie" as well!

I don't name my guitars except for one. I call it the invisible guitar. It's the one that I play air guitar with. It was actually free yet priceless.

I've been meaning to talk to you abput that one, the intonation is in need of adjustment.

Mark, all I can say with the invisible guitar every time I do the intonation and the wind blows it gets thrown out of intonation. Darn, never says in intonation or in tune!

What a bummer. Maybe there's less wind near the ground. From now on don't stand on your air-amplifier.

Or, 'Moses' would work...
Or how about "Jonah"?

I think I'll go with Moses (saved out of water) over Jonah (dove).

I was thinking of the Jonah who spent so much time in the belly o' the whale. Is there another Jonah?
Your reference is probably hilarious, Mark S, but outside my (admittedly narrow) scope of knowledge.

I knew that Moses (Mosheh) meant "saved out of water" but I actually Googled Jonah to find out that it meant dove although I would have been pleased had it meant "saved out of sea creature". In those days the custom was to name someone for a trait or even an event in there life. If something significant happened to you it might change your name. I'm glad it isn't that way now, I'd have been changing my name all the time. -

I've redone 9 of em' Mark. Wasn't too bad. Well except for the time involved. I had some special names for some of those projects too. Most of them involved smurfin' explitives that are inappropriate for this forum. It was a real learning experience. I ended up selling one, giving the rest away except one. That one is about to go to a school in Ohio. There were a couple of basket cases in the bunch too. Just took a little sweat and a lot of time.
Here is a photo of some of them. All guitars in the photo are Katrina damaged except the blue Stratocaster. They spent 2 weeks under salt water in a pawn shop. The owner of the place threw them in the dumpster. I'm not ashamed to say that I went dumpster diving with his permission. When I got them, most were literally in pieces. (separated fret boards, headstocks off the necks, splits in the bodies, warped stuff everywhere. I learned a lot about complete refinishes.)

Ah, literal translations from the original Hebrew.
The pithy and mordant wit of your posts is equaled only by the intellectual acuity and stunning breadth of knowledge that you bring to the party.
Thanks, Mark S.

This Strat was split cleanly into three pieces when I pulled it out of the dumpster. The body also warped. It was placed on a joiner, reglued and later planed level before a final sanding. Took a little router work to get things perfect again. The neck was also in pieces. If you look at the above pic, you can see it refinished and propped against the amplifier. Ended up being a good little player. It was painted using cheap spray paint from cans and then french polished to a mirror shine. It actually looked good when completed. I never gave it a name because I didn't want to get attached to it. The kid that plays it now loves it. Its on the kids myspace page as the profile pic. She is very proud of it.

Otterbean, that's amazing!
I don't really have any names for my guitars though. Just The Strat and The Gretsch, or if I refer to them both, The Strat 'n The Gretsch.
I used to want to name my guitar (when I just had one) but then I thought that it would be somewhat meaningless to come up with a name for the sake of naming it. If either of my guitars ever get named it will be due to an event of some significance where I "know" I need to name them.

Oddly, only my Gretsches were given nicknames.
My 6118T is Sharon Jean, after my wife. My 3161 is Isabella, after my daughter.
The 3161 seemed a bit more exotic, with the cat eye f-holes and all, so Isabella seemed more appropriate for that one.
