I'm a musician not an accountant.
It is probably true the writers/musicians get the smallest amount. The most goes to people in suits.

My old punk band that i played drums for was bootlegged at our worst show ever, our singer/bass player kept getting electricuted by the mic every 30 sec or so. The guy that bootlegged us came up to us later and was really exited about how good we were and when he told us he bootlegged us we were down right honored and rather surprised. I never did hear the bootleg but im sure it was quite awful.
I'm another one who has never downloaded any music from the net,i like to have something tangible.
I miss the large album cover art too.
I think it's great that you can download rare out of print albums that will most likely never see the light of day, but I don't see the point in downloading (stealing) commercially available product. If it's something that I really like, I want the physical medium in my possession.
I think the internet has basically put an end to the bootleg age, as far as sales go. If you were to do a online search right now, I bet you could find almost every Beatles bootleg ever released available to download somewhere (not to mention all the fan-created titles).
