Mark S(ynchro) has asked that anyone with an oversized avatar resize it. Another option, in order to expedite the refreshing of screens in the guitar giveaway would be to have everyone temporarily remove their avatar. This should substantially increase the refresh speed and then we could restore the avatar after the contest is over.
Any thoughts?
JC, stjohn and tartan - all of your avatars are too big. No more than 90 pixels wide.
Baxter said: Every time you posts with one of those avatars, it's got to load the whole ginormous thing for every single thing you do. You're personally adding SUBSTANTIALLY to the slow page times, 502 errors and other problems. It's an inch sqare image. Uploading a full image off your 10-megapixel camera is stupid and rude to everyone else on the site.Avatars should be no more than 90 pixels wide, and a proportionate height, at 72 dpi. That's under 10 k, or in terms of your digital camera, .06 megapixels (if I've done my math right).
Hey Proteus, anything else for us? I need something to tide me over till the Annie contest!
Bax just made a statement about oversized avatars on a different thread. This is for the good of the board folks.
cgs: my avatar is 8115 bytes; yours is 10,674. Mine is 100 x 70 pixels, yours is 100 x 76 pixels. I've resized mine before, and honestly don't think mine's the issue, as I've seen much bigger. I think the problem my be the amount of traffic all tuning in to this tread. Just my .02.
the file size on mine was already under 4KB, but what the heck, fixed it anyway.
stjohn, I'm just repeating what Baxter said. I've just replaced mine cos I realised it was too big. I didn't mean to be rude if thats how I came across.
Mine is only 90 h x88 w ?
But i'll remove it if ya think it'll help.
tartan phantom-you gave me a belly laugh. And who could disagree with your well phrased text?
I may not have won anything from the NAMM giveaways, but my N.E Patrriots are going to the Super Bowl!! It's now 2nd qtr of the Packers/Giants game, and it's possible that my # 1 & # 2 favorite quarterbacks might be facing off in Arizona. I'm a winner!! Proteus, I'm impressed with the sound clips of the two Electromatics. Even the Gretschbuckers sounded great. I have a hard time choosing. It kinda confirms an earlier thread and theory that much of the sound of an artist is in the fingers and execution. You always sound excellent and approimately the same regardless of which guitar or which amp your playing. Unmistakeable Proteus tone. I realize you often play the same licks and voicings, for reasons of sound comparison, but I'm guessing you use the same settings on each guitar and amp, regardless if you're in Indiana or California. Care to share those settings? I'd like to "borrow" your settings/sound,with your permission.
I feel the urge to just ramble here since I haven't been able to get a post in at a reasonable time slot. But ,I yield the floor.
Folks, regarding avatars, as far as page loading speed, I don't believe has to do with dimensions as much as it has to do with file size!
Remember Gretschmaster and everybody, only one guess(post) for the triva questions! No going back and edit answers in the post either.
Dunno, Baxter said it was dimensions - ask him.
In any event, the problems seem to be abating for the moment. I'm beginning to think that avatars are a big headache as much as I love 'em.
I suspect that the dimensions mess with the page layout and may slow things down a bit at the browser end.
Is this one any better?
It looks crap though
I'll be changing it back tomorrow!
Looks like crap?!?!?! That's the holy grail!
I just got on after trying for the last 2 1/2 hours !!! Thanks goodness the Patriots won or I would really be upset. Those Newcastle Brown Ales would have tasted good in one of those Gretsch beer mugs during the game.
cgs, no problem. I changed mine to the smallest I could find....hopefully this will work.
I usually compare mine to others on the board, and as long as it is comparable, I think it's ok. Well, I think a lot of us (myself included) keep avatars just at or above the limit. With limited traffic, it's probably not that big a deal, but add the traffic generated by this weekend, and the problem creeps back in.
Hope it helps!
I'm sure it will. Cheers!
Oh i'm not takling about that beautiful guitar on the cover of that great book
Just that i prefer Django, that's all
