Anyone given any thought to getting rid of the net in there household? As i am sitting here at work pondering once again the cluster that awaits me home (about 5 projects halfway completed, the biggest being our master bedroom has walls tore out) I have come to the conclusion that the internet is our biggest distraction. I have 3 pc's and one laptop at home. 1 recording pc, 2 general use and laptop loaded for gaming. I hate to put it to my kids who play stuff like agame and nickolodeon but im thinking I am seriously going to have to get rid of the net at home. Anyone do something similiar??? Any advice??? It also goes without question that this is the reason I have about 30 songs in various stages of completion from the last 3 years.. I am almost ashamed to admit it but I know I am not the only one..
No Internet???

While you're at it take away your mobile phone. Rediscover what life was like before we had these "distractions"
5 projects at home? Get rid of it man. Or at least limit yourself.
Maybe you should get rid of it for a month and see how you go.

There's always a monastery.
That will take care of your distractions.
Seriously, we all have distractions. It takes a bit of discipline to manage them. (I'm writing this to myself, as well)

Remodeling a home while living in it can be a hellish nightmare. Been there, done that. I'd concentrate on getting that chore over with if possible. Maybe you could send the kids to Amish camp for a few weeks to wean them off the wiley ways of electronic gadgetry, lol!

You can't ever "go back." People didn't go back to candles after they had oil lamps or horse and buggys after the automobile came along. You just need to get orgainzed a little--schedule or set aside designated times for certain activities and tasks. Finsh one job and disregard the others until it's done. Every once in a while just sit back and take a breath...

I think it's pretty hard to stop using the Internet, it's become part of business. I don't have any choice in the matter, my work requires that I have access pretty much 24/7. It sure beats a flying round trip to work in the middle of the night to resuscitate a mail server.

I really understand where you're coming from; television, mobile phones, the internet - they're all huge distractions. Don't get me wrong, I'm no luddite - I find the internet extremely useful as I'm a student. Television is for the most part a big suck on time. Mobile phones are also a huge distraction. Prior to the mobile phone people couldn't catch people on the move. Again, this is helpful too - but often it's a pain what with inane text messages or telemarketing assholes bothering you during the day. My advice would be to just get on with the projects; chances are that when you're seriously involved with them you won't want to stop anyway. I recently redecorated my study and it took A LONG TIME. I had to have the walls plastered (they were in an awful state) which with stripping, applying the plaster, and drying time took over a week. I had new carpet put on my floor, new paint job, curtains, furniture, light fittings - the works. It took a long time to complete but I spent every spare hour I had making sure it got done as I use that study every day and all of my stuff (books, guitars, amps, paintings, etc) was all over the house and needed to be repatriated. I'll admit there are still little bits that could be improved but for the most part it looks pretty good. And I'll tell you another thing - I'm pretty much the WORST when it comes to procrastination... just get into it man - you have the power!

When I was in college I had free internet and TV, and a cell phone. Then we moved to Tucson and money was tight so we had no TV besides the stuff that we bought in college on DVD and we kept our cell phones for emergencies but as far as everything else went, all information was second hand, we were in the dark about everything that was popular and "in" and our communication with people on the internet plummeted since we had to drive to the library to use it 30 minutes at a time.
It's interesting to get rid of, but I like having it too. It only has as much control over you as you let it.

According to Senator Ted Stevens of Alaska, it's "a series of tubes".

Well, at least we know it's not a dump truck... I've noticed that some youtubers are calling the poor guy Senator Ted 'Series of Tubes' Stevens. It will be on his gravestone no doubt.

i think that rather than dumping the Net altogether, you'd be better off quitting the Net usage that is most distracting. I notice that you mentioned gaming; i gave up computer games years ago because i decided that it was a colossal time suck...i'd spend hours online and wind up feeling stressed and awful. I also have largely given up downloading music, because i didn't even have time to listen to 50% of the downloads and it took up so much of my time. now i basically use the computer for a ready reference (i can look up anything i want to) and as a way to wake myself up in the mornings by reading news and blogs. personally, i find TV to be a worse distraction...i can plonk down in front of the TV with minimal effort while getting way less in the way of actual content.

Poor Stevens. Hey, he was actually around when the Internet was still the ArpaNet. There could have conceivably been some tube based mainframes that were part of the net, so I guess coming from his old geezer point of view, there might be some accuracy in his statement.
Oh, and a minor point, it's Internet with a capital I. An internet with a lowercase 'i' is not THE Internet; it's a group of internetworked computers, but not necessarily connected to the Internet...
Yeah, us Silicon Valley types that that personally

BTW, I remember when it was carrier pigeons with cages next to major computer centers. It worked pretty well until a stop-bit got eaten by a cat and the rest of the message got scrambled.

Well I went off the wagon Mon and Tues... didnt get anyhting done but I made good progress today and my goal of getting 2 projects done by the end of next weekend is looking better... I got new drywall up and got it taped... carpet ripped up.. gonna have new installed where as before I was going to do it myself.. Have a dumpster coming next week..(expensive they really whack you) I see a light now. Then i am going to rip out our downstairs bathroom and start all over.. Its small it shouldnt be as bad as the huge room I just did. I literally put my laptop in my junk cabinet so I wouldnt even think about it. I see cellphones mentioned. I hate cellphones. We have them but I hardly ever use it. A couple years ago a car hit me almost head on while I was on a motorcycle. Had my phone and was able to call 911 and my wife before I blacked out. Thats my cellphone story!

I think your mobile phone story is a good example of what phones should be used for.

I did but he fell in love with a passing Mourning Dove and we ended up losing him too.
