Im not gonna comment on what i think of this situation because i don't have enough info but my absolute best memories are from watching my dads garage/punk band play in a bars and clubs when i was around 8-10. I was blissfully ignorant of any sinister or lewd goings on and i cherish those memories like nothing else and im sure the stuff my dad was singing about was worse than anything the crowd was talking about if could have hear the crowd. Even in my adult life i can't really think of anything really bad ive seen in a bar. Maybe its different in the U.S. but in my town the bars are pretty tame the streets a generals far worse. I think sometime we think the worst when we hear stories like this and invision scenes from movies we have watched. I also think preforming would be very different than spectating. I think in this age tv is probably worse than what you would see in the average bar but again there are other things to be concerned about when your kid is preforming.

I agree that 8 is very young, and this kid can only get better as time goes on , but if you read his responses and comments, well, he sounds very mature for his age. I also agree that his parents should ultimately be the ones to guide him through this or cut it off, whichever they deem.
Bars really aren't a place for 8 year olds but I think this kid does deserve a chance somewhere. Michael Jackson's just a freak, IMO, he would have turned out weird regardless. He is talented as well though. JMO peace, Dave

What does the kid lose by Not playing in bars at age 8?
Those of us who do or have played in bars...would we seriously want our third grader even being IN a bar?
What's the hurry...?
As for "he can only get better".
Perhaps. Perhaps not. An awful lot of factors control that....

Hmmm.
Well, frankly, I saw just about everything I've ever seen in a bar by the time I was in sixth grade. Not recommended, I agree, but it sounds like you have a doting parent, a doting band and a crowd of doters looking out for him.
You guys are right in that a bar is no place for a kid. I was able to get in bars at the age of 16, and I was lucky not to get my butt kicked a couple of times by 20 something construction workers. This seems a bit different.
On the other hand, the smoke factor really is a factor. I can feel it after we play. My eyes and lungs. So much second-hand smoke rolls up onto the stage...

I played my first bar gig when I was in 9th Grade. I think 3rd Grade is a bit young but if the kids good and the parents are keeping an eye out on his well being it may be ok. I know locally if you're underage and a performer you have to leave the bar area when you're not playing. You also have to have a sheet signed by your parents granting you permission to play there. The problem with some kids today is they don't have the opportunity to see the otherside of life as a performer. Their only outlet is putting a song on Myspace which isn't quite the same thing...
