Oooo Beggars was huge for me way back when...anything Stones w Mick Taylor.
Otto?...Otto parts?
My fav line in Repo is the guy who winds up driving the car talks about seeing plates of shrimp, or when he says John Wayne was a fag, or when Otto's friend dies in the store, I could go on...
"Let's go do some crimes...yeah, let's order sushi, and not pay"

Bonedaddy,
I had a feeling you would like Repo too when you listed that Slash compilation.
I own that record, and it is amazing. So many great bands on one record.
It really did change the course of what I was listening to as well.

Yeah man, that Slash record was an epiphany for me. Particularly X and The Blasters. Also Rank and File. Cowpunk at it's finest.

I don't know if it's a generational thing or what, but I can't listen to any of that late 70s/early 80s punk stuff. I know a lot of you guys love it, but it does absolutely nothing for me. Not trying to pick a fight... I respect the music(ians), I just don't get it. Maybe I wasn't rebellious enough as a teenager?

'All my Friends are Dead.' HA HA HA HA. I nearly choked on my tea. Oh... I have to get that album. It's on the list with 'Socialized Medicine' and 'Ken: by request only.'

I understand Otter. Don't fear the reaper.
That album, in particular, lead me towards alt country, rockabilly, and American roots music. I personally don't consider Los Lobos, Blasters, X, or Rank & File Punk at all. It's just what the record companies called anything that wasn't prog/arena/AOR of the time.
Quite the marketing mistake on their part, and an insult when you consider that Flock of Seagulls and X were both considered to be the same music.

ah, yes, "New Wave." or as i used to say, "New Wave, Old Hat." it took me years to hear anything valid in the 1979-1986 period because so much of the prominent "alternative" music of the time in the US was either utterly fake (The Knack, The Cars) or poorly represented (has a band ever been more poorly served by singles releases than R.E.M. when they were on IRS?).
i used to have the front page from the Blows cover booklet hanging on the wall in my apartment. it was about 1976. soon it would be joined by the hostage-note cut-and-paste ad for Never Mind the Bollocks with the "we're the flowers in your dustbin" quote. though i had difficulty with the aesthetics, especially in the early 80s, the transition from 70s rock to punk deconstructionism seemed totally logical to me, the equivalent of the reactionary urge to "get back to the roots" in the early 70s but aimed at the dark side of the 60s rather than at rock classicism.

Another vote for Miles Davis 'kind of blue' from me. Anything with Cannonball Adderley playing on it too....
Or Elvis Presley's first U.K release LP from 1956 - the U.K release had different tracks than the U.S version. I've still got my Dad's original copy and still remember the impact it had on me as a kid

AJ: X not Punk at all?
Correct, but I'll clarify.
Not Punk in that they could play well, write great songs, and sing them emphatically.
The only thing Punk about X, the Ramones, etc... was the energy. Something missing from Rock since the early days.

One album... jeez. When asked questions like this I can't rely on what immediately jumps to mind. I need some outside help. I jumped onto iTunes to see which album is played the most and right now it's Pandalerium from the Shack Shakers.
Of course there's SO much more awesome music out there so it's really unfair to limit it so much. Even top 5s are too few. Maybe 25 would do.
Argh! I hate these desert island games. With so many good choices, I feel guilty for not saying other bands or albums.

Maybe it's not a punk thing for me; I can listen to the Ramones, The Replacements, New York Dolls, etc.
I think I just don't like British music from the 80s. Bands like the Clash, Sex Pistols, Police, U2, and the Smiths range from mildly tolerable to worthlessly despicable, in that order.
I guess this shouldn't be a thread about what bands I hate, so I'll add another album that I really like.
"Dub Side of the Moon" - Easy Star All Stars. Dub/reggae version of Dark Side. I first heard this album when I was really into Pink Floyd, and frankly I listen to it more often now than any 'Floyd. Admittedly it's a novelty album (bong noises at the beginning of "Money," etc), but it got me more into reggae than anything Bob Marley put out.

Yes. I disagree strongly about this bunch of joyless pretentious feckers being included in said category. Especially straight after you mentioned Beck's incredible 'Sea Change' album

Crowbone said: Not Punk in that they could play well, write great songs, and sing them emphatically.
So you buy into the revisionist story that Punk was only dumb music played poorly? I guess that will hold true if you (and a fair number of music critics)automatically exclude any of the intelligent bands that could play well by virtue of the fact that they are intelligent and play well.
Oh, I see that this is my second post in this thread and I haven't given a favorite/greatest/whatever album. Well, I'll state my "favorite" because I wouldn't even know what criteria would be used for "greatest": Devo - Q: Are We Not Men, A: We Are Devo. Of course there are dozens of other albums that fight for the top spot, but this album is one that thrills me just as much with every play as it did the first time I heard it. -
