bottles, nothin'...i expect you could get pretty good distance hitting a flying beer drinker with a T-60. though it'd be just as effective to drop it on his foot.
What would you pick: Barroom Brawl/Guitar Weapon

I agree with the mic stand idea, I've swung more than one at people. However I have a secret weapon I take to really rowdy gigs. I used to play in a metal band that had a very controversial name (our first gig had a bomb threat called in) so I would take a piece of a lighting instrument from work. I work with theatre lights, and there is a piece of the rigging that's about 3/4 of an inch in diameter of solid steel, and fits perfectly in my hand. I kept that on top of my amp at every gig. Otherwise the $100 Epi LP Jr. I carry as my backup to rough gigs would suffice.

Jeez.
You guys need better gigs...
I have played in some pretty rough places in my younger days, but I got nothin' to prove at almost age 60. I've had my share of inconsiderate drunks to deal with but I like livin' free. Defense is one thing. Taking out your pent up resentments on someone's who's drunk ain't exactly a fair fight.
I'm no pansy, and don't always side with MR. Trouble, but in this case he's making a lot of sense to me.
That said, a Tele would be my defense of choice, but even they won't stop a bullet if the guy you skull with it doesn't go down and he's packing.

In the spirit of deterrence rather than aggression, I would say that playing this instrument would make folks think twice before messing with you:
And if you show up at the gig sporting this baby, at most venues, people will leave you alone: http://www.giffen.com/guitarpix/wangcaster.jpg

Thankfully there are very few requirements for 'chicken wire' stages these days.
I play an upright bass most of the evening during our gigs and it's frightening when an uninvited drunken couple decide they want to sing Be-Bop-a-Lula with us and always seem to fall down in the direction of me and my bass.
I really don't like these gigs but I'm 1 in a 7 piece band and majority wins.

This thread went from a brawl to bothersome drunks. There is a world of difference.
A human being is a paradox. Tough, resilient, a survivor, yet fragile.
The light, generally dismissive of consequence, talk here of inflicting damage upon another human is, for the most part, kid's stuff.
In a blink of an eye, a life can be irrevocably altered for the duration.
Sending someone to the hospital, where is learned the technical terminology for the result of damage done, the sometimes depressing as hell prognosis, is not something to take lightly.
When you leave a mark on someone's life to such extent, you also mark your own soul.
Avoid whenever possible.
Life is short, Eternity long.
Consider being more careful, mindful, of the thoughts you entertain, the words you use, where and how you invest YourSelf.
Or don't.

I wouldn't hit someone with a guitar - it is a criminal act, but it's also just wrong. I have shoved a couple people off the stage with my foot, though.
I was once knocked into the PA speakers by a surging crowd while playing a hardcore show. The whole thing fell on top of me, and I was wearing a cast on my leg! Nothing to do but set the speakers back up and tell the kids to cool out.
The Tele and the Kramer get my vote anyway. Paul Burlison (Johnny Burnette and the Rock and Roll Trio) famously stated that the Tele (or Esquire, in his case) was the best for self-defense, and even stayed in tune.

Oct 29, 2008 4:39 p.m. Proteus:
I've never had a physical confrontation in my life, unless elementary tussles with siblings and a push-back in the locker room at 13 count.
Taken plenty of hazing abuse and humiliation at one time or another, but saw no way that fighting back would either work for me or accomplish anything.
I don't even like verbal or virtual confrontations. Not much of a voice-raiser, and never been in a situation where I felt my life or health were being threatened by someone else.
Shots rang out in a bar once; it seemed a bit unreal, and we cleared out.
The Kramer incident, to which I've alluded in the past, was real enough. The other guitarist was wearing the guitar, and unwisely provoked a drunken, sullen crowd. Guy came lurching up over the monitors at him, clearly in attack mode and muttering what he was going to do.
Buddy really just turned sideways, instinctively presenting the headstock of the Kramer as a self-defensive obstacle, without thrusting or positioning it. It all happened too fast for any of that. The lurcher's forward motion carried him into the forked stock at mouth level. Blood flowed; teeth may have been lost.
Other audience members pulled the guy back, everyone restraining everyone else, and the incident was over. So was the gig.
At least at the Saturday night bingo-food-beer-n-dance fest at a midwestern fraternal club, bad vibes and the sudden violent (if largely incidental) production of blood spells the end of good times.
(I know the über-thin honduran mahogany Melody Maker I was dancing with at the time would be the worst self-defensive guitar imaginable.)
Anyway, the Kramer 350, with its proprietary single-coil pups and Ebonol neck, is a dandy guitar in any respect, clearly Telestic, but with its own unique tone, response, and feel.
This thread made me get it out of its case today (not the one from the incident, but one like it); it hadn't been out for a couple of years, but was perfectly in tune and ready to twang.
Since our gig in 1980 ended immediately after the Kramering of our malefactor, I can't say whether that particular 350 was still in tune afterward.

I had one of those Kramers!
Not too good for outdoor gigs, as I recall, constantly going sharp as it heated up.
But you can always use it to separate ball joints while doing front end work on your car!

It's funny how violence is accepted on an international scale but not on a personal level. It's ok to bomb and shoot thousands of people but it's not ok to punch someone in the mouth. Anyway that Axe guitar in the pic above has the same headstock and pickup as my buddies kramer bass but his bass has just one pickup in the middle position.

For the moralists, let's assume our hypothetical situation involves a suddenly hostile irrational person or persons that you can't escape from, a physical confrontation is imminent, and it's a split-second decision between being an attack victim or defending yourself.
Better?
Carry on.
