I just bought an early '62 model 6120 with the old mute system. There is a little wire that connects the knob to the actual mechanism that raises and lowers the damper. This spring loaded wire is broken. I have been trying to find another, but all the ones I have seen are not the right ones, they dont fit. Any suggestions?

Is the mute the dial type where you turn a dial to raise and lower the mute or is it the lever type where you flip the knob to raise and lower it? Below is a photo of the new replacement lever type being sold.

What's wrong with trying to bring your vintage guitar back to factory spec? I understand that... So, having said that, I'm suspecting that you are after a vintage part, Thud?

Maybe posting some pictures showing the mechanism - what's left and what's missing - would stir up some suggestions. It can be hard to conceptualize some of the finer points of Gretsch gadgetry.

I know how to palm mute, I'm just trying to bring it back to factory specs. I would prefer to find a vintage part if I can, but from what I understand they only made a few hundred.

Is the one that antik pictured the one you have thudfan? I would think you could fabricate some sort of suitable replacement wire from something at the hardware store. That's probably somewhat how the original was made anyways.

Thud, post some detailed photos please if you can. I recenty got a '61 Club and the whole dial up system is missing. I've searched the U.S. Patent drawings and that helped but would still like to see actual photos. From the looks of it some of the new RI flip up part might work but the dial part...well that is altogether different.

I'll try to get some pics, if that will help. I just got some pictures of the actual guitar which I will post later. Got into the body of the guitar, turns out the Clip isn't broken afterall bust just came loose from a little wooden piece that it was attached to.

thud, that is good to hear! Glad you where able to fix it. I would dearly like to see some good detailed photos of the dial up assembley if you can swing it.
I'm missing everything except the little wooden block that holds the screw shaft that attaches to the underside of the top.

Jaydar, thanks for the advise, fortunately once I got into it, I discovered the wire wasn't broken, it had just come loose from the little wooden block inside there. I glued it back on and the mute works fine.
