I'm thinking of putting my pre-FMIC hi-gain (8k) Gretsch Filtertrons (with Alnico magnets) up for auction very soon, so if anyone's interested, here's a little song excerpt to show how they sound. It's my ex-wife singing with me twanging on the '66 Tennessean (which now has TV Classics).
Wanna hear what pre-FMIC "hi-gain" Filtertrons sound like?

Do you think I should even sell these pickups? I just listened to the track again and they sound great! Some future guitar might really benefit from this unique sound some day. Now I don't know what to do...

Keep em- They sound better than my Pre FMIC filters. What amp did you use for that recording? I've found that the pre FMIC p/u's need a bit (way) more preamp gain to sound good.
Throw em in a new Vintage Vibe tele and I'd bet they would sound killer.

Great song, great recording, great sound on that Tenny. I'd not only keep the Filtertrons, but I'd keep the ex-wife. She can really sing.

They often get a bad rap but those pre-Fender filtertrons have a really good sound. I'd keep them for a future project. Besides, its not like you'd get a whole lot for them.

Gol darn; where'd those Filters get such a bad rap!
Not only that; but that song sure could use a little more exposure. Beats the heck out of a lot of the stuff that's out there in the top 10 right now!

I haven't listened to the recording, but I can only say that my pre-Fender filtertrons sounded completely crap. I'm not just saying this, and I'm not bought up in some hype about TV Jones, but I can honestly say that replacing the pups completely re-vitalised my guitar, it was like night and day with the TVs in (Magna bridge/Power neck).
BTW I sold my pre-Fenders on ebay and got £30 (around $60 at the time) for the bridge and £20 ($40) for the neck.

You have to remember that those particular Filtertrons have Alnico magnets in them. I bought a set of NOS magnets from Duke Kramer back in the mid '90s so that's what accounts for their non-typical pre-FMIC Filtertron sound. I used my '64 Super Reverb with an Echoplex for that track.

That's what I'm beginning to think also. I'll probably only get $50-$75 for them and then regret it later. It's not like I can just buy these exact pickups again. The 8k winding with the old Alnico magnets was obviously a a nice unique combination that worked great for a long time. Currently, I really do like the new sound I have with my Tennessean and the TV Classics, but I'm sure these pickups will find a home in some future "project" guitar.

Audiodrome, that guitar sounds excellent. I really enjoyed your playing too. The whole track is great!
If you change your mind and decide to sell the pickups, I'll buy them from you.
